What is 'Data Management'?

Research Data Management concerns the organisation of data from its entry into the research cycle through to the dissemination and archiving of valuable results.

Research Data Management is also commonly referred to as RDM.

'Data management’ is the preferred term at the CSIR.

When talking about the management of data, it includes activities such as:

  • creating a Data Management Plan (or a DMP),
  • data storage and backups,
  • creating metadata and data documentation,
  • data sharing, data publication, data reuse, and
  • long term preservation of data.
