Data Management Plan (DMP): What is a Data Management Plan?

This guide serves as an introduction to Data Management Plans (DMPs), and will assist CSIR researchers in creating their own DMP.

What is a Data Management Plan?

  • A Data Management Plan, or a DMP, is a formal document that outlines how a researcher will handle data both during research, and after the project is completed.
  • The creation of such a plan is increasingly being requested by research funders.
  • A DMP outlines the practices for collecting, organizing, backing up, and storing the data that will be generated.
  • Many templates to assist with the creation of a plan are available, but the basic design is similar.
  • DMP templates to be used by CSIR researchers include the following:
  • A DMP is generally about two A4 pages in length.
