To create a personal account:
Google Sign In allows you to log into your library's EBSCO resources and to create a personal My EBSCOhost account using your Google login credentials (i.e. Gmail account).
Once your personal My EBSCOhost account has been created with your Google credentials, you can use that account to check out and download EBSCO eBooks.
EPUB has become the industry standard format for delivering eBooks, because it enables publishers to create books that behave more like web content. EPUB titles are often embedded with links to help the user navigate between sections, from the index to the relevant pages, and out to the open web.
When accessing or downloading EBSCO eBooks, you may see the choice to select eBooks in either PDF or EPUB format.
EPUB is an open eBook standard and file format that is optimized for viewing on devices. It automatically resizes to fit your screen and when you adjust font size. EPUB is the recommended format for download and is compatible with many eReaders and reading apps, including the iPad/iPhone, Kindle Fire, Galaxy tablets, as well as the Adobe Digital Editions app for iOS and Android devices.
PDFs are not re-flowable, so their text size cannot be adjusted for display on various devices.
There are a few differences in the online eBook viewer depending on whether you are viewing an eBook in PDF or EPUB format.
Linking: EPUB is an HTML-based format, so it may contain links within the text, either to other sections of the book, from the index to relevant pages, and out to the open web.
Reflowable Text: When viewing EPUB format eBooks online, the text will “reflow” depending on the viewing window. This means it will re-size and change shape to fit the size and shape of the screen, like a webpage.
Accessibility: EPUBs are more accessible for impaired readers than PDFs – they function better with screen reading software.
Pagination: With reflowable text, there is a difference in the way that the pages are rendered, because each time the text or window changes, the number of pages also changes. Publishers handle this differently – some embed pages to match the print or PDF version as outlined in the EPUB specification, which is what EBSCO recommends, and some leave them out entirely. When publishers provide EPUB page numbers, they are displayed on the page of the eBook in the EBSCO eBooks viewer, though they cannot be used to jump to a specific page in the text. When publishers do not provide EPUB page numbers, the EPUB viewer will not display a page number. Instead, you can navigate using the Table of Contents sections or using embedded links.
Zoom In/Out: The zoom in/out tools have been removed from the EPUB viewer because the text resizes automatically.
EBSCO eBooks are available in both PDF and EPUB formats. PDF books have page numbers that typically correlate with the print version of the title, and those page numbers may be used for citation purposes. EPUB eBooks are formatted with reflowable text, which means the text resizes to fit the viewing window, and therefore they do not have stable pagination.
Most citation style guides, particularly in the humanities, make allowances for eBooks without stable page numbers.
Depending on publisher-specified limits, up to 100 pages of an EBSCO eBook can be printed, saved or emailed as a PDF file (per user) from within the eBook viewer to be printed at a later time.
