The Technical Outputs Database (TOdB) was originally developed in 1996 to ensure accurate record keeping of all CSIR’s research publications (i.e. research outputs). The need to provide a reliable record of the CSIR’s technical output, to monitor scientific excellence and to promote career development was essential in terms of credibility and good governance.
TOdB New is basically divided into internal and external publications. Internal publications relate to all documentation, such as reports (contract reports, parliamentary grant reports and technical reports), legal documentation (e.g. contracts) and other publications (e.g. proposals, patents and theses). The inclusion of internal publications is not compulsory and is determined by the management teams of the various operating units and research centres. External publications which include journal articles, books and book chapters, as well as conference papers and presentations or posters on the other hand are required. The information capture in TOdB is used for establishing a Unit’s publication equivalent points and for the performance evaluation of individuals.
ResearchSpace is the CSIR’s public institutional repository and is a subset of TOdB. Institutional repositories are also referred to as self-archiving and can be regarded as a window to the world. This enables the CSIR to share the organisation’s intellectual property in a copyright-controlled environment with the knowledge that copyright agreements are honoured and that the information shared is accurate and of benefit to the wider scientific community.
